Comment Moderation

— posted at May 10th, 2005 by zaaba in Blog

I’ve noticed an increase in comments on certain posts, notably the one Lucas wrote on removing the MSN virus. I can’t remember if we issued a warning, but comments on posts > 10 days go automatically into the moderation bin and if they contain > 1 link, they are automatically deleted. Blame it on the copious amount of spam that td.com got before the upgrade to WP 1.5 :P

What to do? Get a decent antivirus. Keep the antivirus updated. Don’t download or click on suspicious files. Use Firefox! Keeping your computer sanitized ensures you keep your sanity.

So, if you write a comment and it doesn’t show up, don’t fret and FFS, DON’T SPAM! Comments are moderated… err… regularly, so they should pop up eventually.

Also, taking the time to wish Rozanna 22nd HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Have fun showing off your new bling-bling hehe!

2 Weeks

— posted at May 8th, 2005 by zaaba in Blog

The title of the post says it all. 2 more weeks to my finals. And they end a week and a day after that. Right on my dad’s 52nd birthday summore. Woot. What a way to celebrate the end of my university years.

Its been a long ride. And I’ve come to realise that law isn’t a course to be trifled with. I partly blame myself for that. I let television and the books I read alongside what people have come to tell me what they thought I was good at as a guide to choosing what I thought would be a slam dunk for a career choice. I guess that’s not to be. Must learn to capitalize on my skills more next time.

I’ve fallen out with law. But heck, I’ve learnt lots though: the way they teach you to approach problems will be an invalueble skill to have in the future and I have my course to thank for that. Yet came the revelation that law just isn’t for me. At least for a career. And for now anyway. I might change my mind.

Looking forward to my last summer. Its going to be work-for-real right after. A new chapter in life I’m really not looking forward to.

But before that: 7 questions, 6 hours, 3 exams, 2 essays and 1 degree to finish.

About td.com: Shoutbox!

— posted at May 8th, 2005 by zaaba in Blog, Practical Computing

To answer Chwis’ question: truedeath.com’s shoutbox runs on Onlyshout from www.onlywebmasters.com. I’ve included a downloadable copy of the sourcefiles here on truedeath.

Onlyshout is a PHP based, flatfile shoutbox system that features smileys (disabled here) and a bad word censor. The only thing from the last shoutbox in td.com version 2 (the pixel art one) is the alternating colours for the rows, a feature that can be implemented if you know a bit of PHP code. Files are called via phpinclude: once for the shoutbox and again from within the shoutbox file for the shout txt file itself. See sourcefiles. The shouts scroll using CSS via a fixed height tag and overflow: scroll.

Deleting spam is easy. Just wipe the txt file clean. Makes admin work easy too. Shouts are not archived so that keeps the flatfile small for fast loading. Because clicking the submit button forces the entire page to reload, it is not possible to spam comments as if they were called using an iframe. Believe me, I’ve tried :P

Any questions, post them in the comments. I’ll try my best to address them.
