The Internet and Other Things

— posted at September 26th, 2003 by zaaba in Blog

My house just got connected to the internet today after a 2 day delay by our ISP BulldogDSL Communications. Honestly, if it weren’t for the el-cheapo price that came with our package, I’d baptize the ISP Bullshit instead. Oh well, can’t be complaining. Most of the students who live in houses nearby will not be even within a stone’s throw of the internet until the next few weeks pass. I guess that’s a big perk I get outta having 2 housemates who stayed the summer here in Manchester – they arranged for practically everything whilst I was away at home. I only have a slight tinge of pity for the 4th housemate, CS who’ll be flying back this Sunday: bills for x, y and z are already coming his way.

I must say that my new house is par excellence. A reasonably price house (55 PLUS utilities!) coupled with nice furnishings, a spacious loo and an adequately sized room. How adequate? I’ve got a 24” tv in me room AND room to spare – nuff said. The house currently boasts 4 TVs, with the smallest at 24” and 4 PS2s too although 1 is on for sale. As soon as CS gets back, I think we’re going to racun him into getting a Gamecube who’s price has fallen to USD99. Translate this to British pounds and you’ve got a really good deal for a fantastic console with fantastic games. Can anybody say Mario Party, FF Chronicles and Super Smash Bros?

I don’t think I can get away with not commenting on the United – ARSEnal goaless draw the other day. However I think I’ll sum it up in 2 words though to not repeat more cliche insults – Padan muka (serves you right). I had a bloody nice laugh on Thursday when the Guardian put up mug shots of the Arsenal players posing like criminals with the number of charges below. Woot!

Digressing; 1 Mbps my foot! DSLReports shows my speed hitting only 512 kBps. What Bullshit is that? Note to self: Tweak, tweak and tweak!

Finally Online!

Ah, am finally online after a week being here in Shitville. My net will only be up in the house on Wednesday, so don’t expect any miraculous changes to the layout before then. But it’s ready believe me, and all I need is an active net account to get the ball rolling again :) How many times have you heard that? Heh…

Attack of the Killer Wormies

— posted at September 13th, 2003 by zaaba in Blog

Remember W32.Blaster? Yeah, the stupid worm that caused your compie to shut down in 1 minute and disabled your compie’s ability to Cut, Copy and Paste? Apparently, it’s got a couple of friends hanging around and they are all going to exploit that stupid Remote Procedure Call (RPC) call feature—if not fault—in your Micro$oft OSs.

I run Win XP and according to the stats, so do 45.5% of the surfers at td.com here too. I IMPLORE you to heed this advice.

However users of the following operating system do not have much to worry:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

  • Microsoft Windows 98

So instead of giving instructions on how to fix things, I’m taking the high road and reminding you readers out there, please patch your system! You can download the patch over here from Microsoft’s website or alternatively use Windows Update which requires you to be using Internet Explorer (who needs this when you’ve got Mozilla Firebird!)

From Lowyat.net:

In a new security bulletin update by Microsoft, there were THREE (3) NEW flaws found, the most serious which could allow an attacker to run malicious code (i.e. do anything with Local System priviledges) on compromised systems, or they could crash either with intent or accident the RPC service, which would cause most systems running on default settings to reboot within 60 seconds as a standard procedure.

Be noted that these new vulnerabilities supercede those of the previous RPC vulnerabilities that was exploited by the W32.Blaster and Welchia worm. And thus makes all unprotected computers that run the RPC service (by default) will be at risk for a very likely impending virus attack worldwide.

PS: Paging the other two (2) amigos and one (1) senorita who are currently MIA. Where the fuck are you guys?

Of Blogs and Blogging

— posted at September 11th, 2003 by zaaba in Blog

I have not touched Blogger in eons, the last time being when I first enbarked on the great quest (?) to own a blog and a virtual piece of real estate in internet-ville. Last night my sister asked me to teach her how to blog, or more specifically… how to create a website. Talk about a road trip down memory lane!

Well, started off pretty well, with signing ons at Blogger and FreeWebSites.com going smoothly – but right now I’m tearing my hair (or what’s left of it heh) out trying to figure out the right path to the server so that stupid blogger can post via FTP. Apparently, if blogs are hosted on blogspot, you’re restricted to pure html design sans graphics which means no pictures/backgrounds whatsoever. And of course, pure CSS websites are sinfully dull if they are without supplementary graphics. Digressing: extreme cases of excellent CSS design can be found on the csszengarden.

Anyway, I would have dumped her here at td.com temporarily, but learning how to do these things with an unstable server is certainly not the way to go. Things were pretty fine in the beginning of the year before the server switch, perhaps things will be fine and dandy once Mr Server Jenssen looks into things. Wierd… I can’t even ping td.com at times let alone FTP into it. And the DNS server refuses to resolve too at random intervals. Oh well… can’t complain can we :)

And thus the above covers the next excuse for the delay in td.com version 4 point oh heh!

KL Be Damned

Don’t get me wrong. I love KL. I really do. Mamak stalls galore, cheap merchandise and shops that open beyond 6pm in the evening… beats the hell out of crummy Manchester anyday :)

But it’s the fucking DRIVING in KL that suxxorz to the max. Today I decided to make a second trip into the heart of KL - Low Yat Plaza to be precise to buy a CD Burner, some RAM for me Shuttle and more CDs for my WE7 patching :) Took me 8 minutes to get to KL from Taman Tun. I’m serious! 8 minutes…

And 1 hour to find a PARKING LOT. Not a parking space. A parking lot.

Apparently after 4:00 pm, policemen from Jalan Hang Tuah decide to block certain roads. Fine by me… but why do they have to close the roads I want to drive on and when I’m right about to turn into the junction too is beyond me. Murphy’s law at it’s best I tell you. I can only thank the heavens for a particular Jalan Bulan which had a big sign saying “Low Yat Plaza Parking”. That road had no traffic whatsover! What a gem – and I thought all signs in KL were redundant (they still are).

PS: Props go out to all the cars that let me pass this evening and Ah Haw from Compuzone, 3rd Floor, Low Yat Plaza. Great deals from him!

Winning Eleven 7

— posted at September 5th, 2003 by zaaba in Blog

Ok… mebbe the upgrade and skinning of td.com is taking longer than expected. LOL. Hardly something new eh?

Winning Eleven 7

This is probably the main reason why the upgrade hasn’t come about yet. It’s Winning Eleven 7 – the pride, joy and bane of every; well almost every PS2 owner. It’s by far the most realistic footie game out there and whoops EA’s FIFA football ass anyday. Of course, there will be people who might disagree with me opinion, but I tell you FIFAnatics – play WE once and you’ll never look back again.

Previously, WE7 was but a Japanese release – figuring out the menus and figuring out player names, let alone transferring them was a wee bit hard. My rudimentary Jap could get me thru friendlies but as far as playing the master league was concerned, that was all but a pipe dream… but not anymore.

If you are a WE fanatic, then http://forums.evo-web.co.uk/ is the place to be. Patches galore for the patch-mad there. Just make sure you have enough blank cds for testing purposes and for the sake of all that is holy, BURN AS SLOW AS POSSIBLE. I tell you, this patching business is as near to exponential coaster generation can get.

For the interested, I’m currently playing WE7 with: Solidus J2K Environ Patch b1, RedChapFer Beta71 and DrXRay’s Stadium Patch Pack 1. They can all be found here at Lomungtung.
